Looking back in 2021:
Corona and lockdown measures
April 23, 2022
Dear Friends of CHA, South Africa was hit hard by the coronavirus and lockdown
measures, and political unrest further exacerbated the crisis. The past year has
been an especially difficult challenge for Holger and Kay Lorentz. The missionary
couple looks after orphans and also does a wide range of missionary work, including
running soup kitchens and sending aid supplies to other children's homes in need. In
the summer, they received a call for help from a children's home in a remote bush
village. They had run out of supplies, but there were no funds available for
replenishment, and on top of that, there was no safe access due to political unrest.
An adventurous supply mission by helicopter brought rescue, it succeeded with God's
help and the support of donors. Some of our donors made earmarked donations for this
project, and so we were able to support Holger and Kay with € 630 last year.
But at the centre of our commitment last year was Pastor Alfred's project in Ghana. Although with corona-related restrictions, the school at the Elim Academy continued to operate last year. In addition, a dilapidated school building had to be renovated because the wooden structure was in danger of collapsing. The equipment for computer lessons was now outdated, so investment was needed here. A new well had to be drilled. In the Elim Academy's annual report, Linda, who runs the school, wrote that all these measures could be successfully implemented with our help from Germany, that students were coming to school with pride and joy again, and that exam results were getting better and better :-).
The health centre, on which Pastor Alfred and his team have been working for years, has finally made a breakthrough and was able to start operations last year, albeit initially limited to an examination centre and ambulance service. Full operation is expected to start this year.
Last year we were able to send two aid containers, containing items to equip the school and the infirmary: school desks and chairs, hospital beds, wheelchairs, but also medicines and building materials for the remaining work on the building. A larger donation of oats was included to feed our students who also receive meals at the school.
All of this was made possible by the loyal support of our donors: at € 67,565.45, donations last year were around € 22,000 higher than in the previous year. Every euro of these donations went directly to the project, because in Germany we have no personnel costs, no office costs, no storage costs. Your contribution has helped to pay for a wheelchair that has given a disabled child a little zest for life, a sip of water that has quenched a child's thirst, a school place that has helped prepare a child for life, and a smile that has seen a child attend the Elim Academy, with hopes for a future - because education is the way out of poverty.
Thank you for your contribution. Please continue to support us. God will bless you abundantly for it.
