Looking back in 2020:
Containers, ambulances and school buses
January 1, 2021
Dear friends of CHA, in Europe, the coronavirus pandemic has changed many things.
Some have lost loved ones to the virus or its after-effects. According to the
statistics, many African countries, including Ghana, have only been moderately
affected by the virus in terms of public health. However, Ghana has been hit hard in
other ways: Ghana's economy depends, among other things, on the export of cocoa, oil
and gold. The economic downturn in Europe, America and Asia has now almost brought
Ghana's economy, which had been on a positive upward trend until last year, to a
standstill. The effects can be seen in the form of high unemployment, high prices and
empty shelves.
This makes school education all the more important for the next generation, and this is where the CHA work in our project location Ayirebi has been concentrated. School operations at the Elim Academy have continued, albeit with restrictions due to the coronavirus. Work also continued on the new school building, as well as on the medical centre. However, the opening of the medical centre is still a long way off, because in addition to the construction work for completion, the project has suffered a setback with the unexpected death of the intended head physician. Pastor Alfred, who is currently still in Ghana, is currently working hard to clarify the personnel issue so that the medical centre can start operating as soon as possible.
The major challenges of 2020 included procuring the last building materials for the clinic, additional medical equipment and hospital beds, but also sending furniture for the school and replacements for school buses that were constantly breaking down due to poor roads. This is because Ayirebi is located in the bush, relatively remote from civilisation. With discarded inventory from Hamburg hospitals and schools, here mainly from the Asklepios Clinic in Wandsbek and the Bergedorf District School, and with vehicles that the Hamburg fire department gave us at a low cost, we were able to send a total of five relief supplies containers, an ambulance and two school buses on their way. Some other clinics have also benefited from hospital beds that we were able to give them (picture on the right).
Our second active project is Holger Lorentz's home for AIDS orphans in South Africa, which needed a new home and, with God's help and many prayers, donors and supporters, has found a suitable house, so a big move is planned there in the first quarter. South Africa is particularly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, and soup kitchens for the poor and homeless are in high demand. Holger and his team are currently doing additional work here. Holger and his wife Kay started their work 30 years ago after working with the organisation "Youth with a Mission". Further information about this project, for which we received and passed on €600 from our donors for a specific purpose, can be found on the internet atwww.mercyaids.org andwww.resilientkidssa.org.za .
We are overwhelmed by the loyalty of our donors, who have raised a total of € 45,087.29 in the past year – including companies and organisations such as Hoyer Internationale Fachspedition GmbH, the Scheck Foundation and the association Fruchtbarer Boden e.V. The cooperation between the management consultancy Michael Dieckmann Consulting and Streifzug Media GmbH has resulted in a new professional CHA flyer for the Ghana project; the complete design and 1000 copies were made as a donation to the project! And not to be forgotten are the many small and large regular donations, without which the school and the aid shipments would not have been possible. We extend our sincere thanks to all of you. May God bless you abundantly for your contribution!
Please stay with us and continue to support us.
